* Always store essential oils in a coot dark place out of your children’s reach. The safest bottles have a dropper insert which will prevent a child from accidentally swallowing any essence should he get hold of it. Pipette bottles are not safe to use with children around.

* Do not use a candle burner in children’s bedrooms. Instead use an electric vaporizer or place drops on your child’s pillow case or pyjamas.

* Never give your child essential oils to swallow.

* Neat essential oils should not be applied directly to the skin unless specified – for example, Lavender can be dabbed onto minor burns.

* Do not attempt to treat a child who is seriously ill without first contacting your doctor.

* Essential oils are highly volatile and flammable, so must always be kept away from fire or flames of any kind.

Essential oils can have a positive influence on your child’s emotional well-being, too. Babies and children are highly sensitive to smell. A few days after birth a newborn baby already associates mother’s subtle skin scent with comfort, warmth, food and security. If you dab a few drops of an essential oil (such as Rose or Lavender) behind your ears, your baby will come to associate this aroma with you.

Then if the baby finds it difficult to settle if you are not there, a few drops of your personal essence on the cot bumper or a teddy may soothe him.

Some essential oils contain chemicals which are mildly sedative and’ can calm over-excited children. Others have a gentle tonic effect and act as pick-me-ups, helping to revive natural vitality.

Preference for aromas is highly individual. What appeals to one child another may find repellent! Most young children seem to prefer the fresh, uplifting citrus aromas such as Lemon, Mandarin and Sweet Orange. Experiment until you find the one your child seems to like best.

There are many different essential oils, not all of which are suitable or completely safe for babies and children. For newborns only a handful of essential oils are recommended. You can use additional essences as your child gets older, adding to this repertoire as the months and years go by.

For young babies and children choose just one of the essences recommended below. For children over 6 years old you can make simple blends of two different essential oils.

Aromatherapy preparations for very young babies should be well diluted. As your child gets older you can add a few more drops to the carrier oil.
